Kopi Luwak- Coffee lovers, here’s why you need to visit Coorg right away!

Kopi Luwak or Civet Coffee is formed through defecation by the Asian Palm Civet, a small viverrid native to South and Southeast Asia, in simple terms, an Indonesian cat like animal. Kopi is the Indonesian word for coffee and Covet is the name of the cat. The faeces of this cat are collected, finished and finally sold as Kopi Luwak. The unusual process of its production is the main reason of its high pricing, it is produced from the coffee beans that are first digested by Palm Civet or the Civet Cat after consuming the coffee cherries and that is why Kopi Luwak is also known by the name- Cat Poop Coffee or Civet Cat Coffee. Civet Coffee has an earthly and strong aroma without any bitterness or aftertaste.

India has started the production of this variety in Karnataka’s Coorg district. Coorg Consolidated Commodities has decided to produce Kopi Luwak at a small scale in the country’s largest coffee producing state. As heard, the CCC has also decided to open a café to especially serve this coffee. Locally, the coffee is being sold at around 8000 INR per KG in Coorg which is comparatively a lot less than the price of the coffee in the other regions like the Gulf nations and Europe.

The history of Kopi Luwak dates back to the 18th century, when the Dutch established the cash crop plantations in their colony in the Dutch East Indies islands of Java and Sumatra. The taste of Civet Coffee varies with the kind of origin of the beans that are eaten and the processing consequent to the collection, roasting, aging and brewing. The manner by which the Civet selects the berries, and other factors such as the Civet’s diet and health may also impact the quality of the coffee.

Kopi Luwak stands out not only in aspects of taste and aroma, but also when it comes to potential health benefits. The Civet Coffee has non-sticky and antibacterial properties which helps in keeping the teeth clean, it has low acidic concentration because of which it is considered an perfect morning beverage for ulcer patients and the ones who suffer from digestion problems, this coffee is also known to prevent cancer, according to the Harvard Medical School, civet coffee consumption reduces the chances of getting cancer, due to its anti-oxidant properties, Kopi Luwak averts neurological disorders.
